 The Global Market for Agrochemicals 

 Dr Matthew Phillips is a partner in Phillips McDougall, the leading Crop Protection and Biotechnology consultants, regularly quoted by the major agrochemical companies and investment banks. He holds a PhD from the University of Reading and worked for Inveresk Research, Schering Agrochemicals, and was a senior director of Wood Mackenzie.

 The European Market for Agrochemicals

 Dr Antony Goulds is a founder director of Kynetec Limited, a leading marketing research and knowledge management company.  Prior to starting his career in research consulting, Antony held several key positions within the crop protection industry including North European Marketing Manager with Cyanamid.  Current responsibilities include ‘Key Markets for Agrochemicals’, a comprehensive annual study covering 67 countries. 

 The Polish Market for Agrochemicals

 Marcin Chrobot is the founder and president of Martin & Jacob, a Polish marketing and communication agency specialising in agriculture. He has a master degree in sociology and business studies from the Wroclaw University of Economics. Agnieszka Salwach works as a market research specialist for the same company. She has degrees in sociology and in ethnology and cultural anthropology. Martin & Jacob is currently carrying out market research project work in Poland for BASF, Sumi-Agro, Makhteshim-Agan and other crop protection businesses.

 The Rise and Rise of the Non-Crop Market 

 Rod Parker founded Agricultural Information Services in 1988, specialising in market research and consulting on non-crop pesticides.  AIS also has a global database on infestation and loss due to weeds, insects and diseases in crops. Rod previously worked for the Battelle Memorial Institute for 11 years on global pesticide tracking. 

The Betanal Story

 Manfred Weiser has many years of business experience in the agrochemical industry particularly  in generic pesticides. He started his career with Schering in 1983 and held various marketing roles including five years experience in France. Manfred was also managing director of the generic company Stefes, a subsidiary of AgrEvo that had business activities across Europe. In 2000 he became team leader for the industrial crop herbicide business of Aventis and since 2002 has taken on worldwide responsibilities for Bayer Crop Science. 

 Market Growth and Penetration via Product Acquisitions 

 Martin Petersen graduated in International Business Studies. He started his career with the Helena Chemical Company before moving to Brazil as marketing manager of Bayer’s crop protection business group.  Following further Bayer assignments he joined American Cyanamid as executive VP for Brazil before returning to Bayer where he took on responsibility for Eastern Europe.  In 1998 as head of Business Planning and Administration he was a member of Bayer’s Crop protection management board. Martin subsequently led the US business operations of the newly formed Bayer CropScience following the merger with Aventis. He then joined the Gowan Group in 2003 where his current focus is on the international expansion of the Gowan activities as well as sourcing and supply chain issues.

Building a Pan European Product Portfolio through Partnerships and  Alliances 

 Kevin Price has 25 years experience in the crop protection industry with ISK (chlorothalonil, fluazinam and chlorfluazuron), Zeneca (product manager for cereal fungicides, including. Amistar) and now Certis Europe. He has experience in product development, product and project management and sales and marketing gained in the UK, the USA, Central and South America. He is currently responsible for market development for Certis Europe. This role includes strategic development, supplier relationships, product development and registration across the EU. 

Task Forces – A Strategy for Co-operation  

 Dr Ed Sharkey chairs global task forces for five phenoxy herbicides and has been involved with agchem task forces for almost 30 years. Ed was commercial director of the UK herbicide producer, A H Marks & Company Ltd, Bradford, for twenty five years and left the company in 2003 to establish the consultancy Ambechem Ltd.

 Legal Issues Associated with the EU Review and Re-Registrations Processes 

 Claudio Mereu is a partner in the Brussels office of McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP. His practice focuses on European Community law and business law, with an emphasis on chemicals and "life sciences" industry sectors. He serves as the managing partner of McKenna Long & Aldridge's Brussels office. His EC regulatory practice covers all aspects of chemicals, agrochemicals and biocides regulations and restrictions (including notification, data protection, mutual recognition, classification, labelling, marketing and use restrictions). 

 Getting A Product Into The EU Market 

 Dr Nigel Uttley is an organic chemist. He has worked in the agrochemical industry for 20 years, initially as commercial director for a generic and custom manufacturing company. For the last 15 years at his own company Enigma Marketing Research he has specialised in providing marketing and technical information targeted at identifying new opportunities in the agrochemical industry. Enigma also publishes AgriBase a specialist database and multi-client reports (the latest being “New Generic Agrochemicals”) for the agrochemical industry.
