Conferences reported in Crop Protection Monthly during 2003

Brief details of some of the conferences that were reported in CPM during the calendar year 2003 are listed below, together with some relevant website links:

  • Seminar held at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, UK on 23 April 2003 on the Voluntary Initiative versus pesticide tax – join now or pay later, as reported in CPM April 2003
  • Conference on Food Production and the New Trade Agenda on 19-20 May 2003, held in London at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House - as reported in CPM May 2003

  • The first global congress of the International Biocontrol Manufacturers Association (IBMA),  BioControl 2003 - Bringing Science to Practice, held in Béziers, France, from 28-30 April 2003, as reported in CPM May 2003  
  • The 2nd Fresenius Conference on Pesticide Residues in Food, held in Darmstadt, Germany, from 6-7 May by  Akademie Fresenius in association with Institut Fresenius, as reported in CPM May 2003  
  • CropLife International's Annual Conference, held in Brussels in June 2003 in association with EuropaBio.
  • The UK's premier arable event and associated seminars, Cereals 2003, held in June 2003 by the Royal Agricultural Society of England (RASE), incorporating Syngenta’s Sprays and Sprayers
  • The Third AgChem Forum, held in London by IBC Life Sciences from 17-19 June 2003.
  • Plants for Health, a seminar held from 26-27 June at Royal Holloway College, University of London, Egham, UK, organised by ACTIN, the Alternative Crops Technology Interaction Network and the Plant Protein Club. These two organisations have since been replaced by the National Non-Food Crops Centre (www.nnfcc.co.uk), as was reported in the CPM November 2003.

SLUGS & SNAILS CONFERENCE

              

BCPC (www.bcpc.org) joined with the Malacological Society of London to hold a two-day symposium, entitled Slugs & Snails - Agricultural, Veterinary and Environmental Perspectives on 8-9 September 2003 in Canterbury, Kent, UK. Crop Protection Monthly's  European correspondent, Martin Redbond, attended and reported on the symposium.

IV ASIA-PACIFIC CROP PROTECTION CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION -2003

This biennial conference, which is organised by the Pesticide Manufacturers and Formulators Association of India (PMFAI), was held in New Delhi from 18-19 September. CPM's  correspondent, Martin Redbond, attended and reported on the event.

REGISTRATION OF AGROCHEMICALS IN AN ENLARGED EUROPE

The UK company IIR Ltd held a conference on Registration of Agrochemicals in an Enlarged Europe in Brussels from 23-24 September. There was an impressive array of speakers from industry, consultancies, governments and the European Commission, as Martin Redbond and Fred Raveney reported in the November edition of Crop Protection Monthly

SCI FOOD SAFETY CONFERENCE

The Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) is holding a conference on 22 October at its London headquarters on the theme of Is our food safe to eat? Chaired by Andrew Wadge of the UK’s Food Standards Agency, there was a good mix of high-profile speakers from supermarkets, safety authorities and academia. Alan Knowles, attended and reported on the conference in the October edition of Crop Protection Monthly  

25th JORNADAS CONFERENCE

Spain’s annual crop protection conference, the Jornadas de Productos Fitosanitarios, was held in Barcelona at the Institut Quimíc de Sarrià (IQS) from 21-22 October. 

FOURTH ROTHAMSTED BIOMARKET

The Fourth International Rothamsted BioMarket - Bioproducts from Plants and Microbes -  was held from 5-6 November. Brian Hicks, attended and reported on the event in November's CPM.

THE BCPC INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS

BCPC’s international congress, Crop Science & Technology 2003, was held at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) in Glasgow from 10-12 November. The event, which has replaced the Brighton Conference (CPM, November 2002), focused on three main themes: crop protection; crop production and the food chain; and environment and regulation. There were four keynote speakers at the congress:

  • Professor Ian Crute, director, Rothamsted Research, Harpenden, UK

  • Dr Peter Lilford, professor of public awareness and science, University of York, UK (July CPM)

  • Christine Bruhn, University of California, Davis, a former Bawden lecturer at the Brighton Conference (CPM, November 1999)

  • Dick Potts, former director-general of the Game Conservancy Trust, Fordingbridge, UK

There was also a special Focus on Food Forum running from 11-12 November.

Crop Protection Monthly's editor, Brian Hicks,   attended and reported on the event, together with several of his correspondents. The main conference report was published in the November edition, with a further report in the December edition of Crop Protection Monthly. 

POTATO PRODUCTION - LIVING WITH PESTICIDE CHANGES

This conference was held jointly on 25 November by the Pest Management Group of The Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) and the British Potato Council. It was hosted by the Central Science Laboratories, York, UK. 

Crop protection chemistry available to potato growers has diminished and this will explore some of the alternative control strategies for key pests and diseases. Alan Knowles, attended and reported on the conference in the December edition of Crop Protection Monthly.    

7th INTERNATIONAL AFPP CONFERENCE ON PLANT DISEASES

Brian Hicks,  attended  this event, which is the biggest conference in the French crop protection calendar. His report was featured in the December 2003 and January 2004 editions of Crop Protection Monthly
